Indya Pearce is a visual artist practicing in Meanjin (Brisbane), Australia working across multiple disciplines such as painting, photography, drawing and textiles. Majority of her subject matter features oil painted faces and bodies, generally depicted through vibrant, surrealistic colours. Influenced by the artist’s conflicting relationship with her own body in a modern world, these works address concepts regarding pressing topics such as body image, identity and self-worth. She is also strongly inspired by film, narrative and cinematography.
Her recent painting series investigates discomfort using the Greek mythological narratives of Leda and the Swan and Picasso’s Minotaur. Embedded with inherent power dynamics and non-consensual encounters, she reflects on the complexities of autonomy and body politics. She aims to promote a deeper exploration of psychological and bodily experiences of contemporary womanhood.
Pearce has recently completed her Bachelor of Visual Art at Queensland College of Art, Majoring in Painting. She has been part of a large variety group of shows both independently curated and invitational. She has been invited to take part in the QCA 'Undergrowth' and 'Second Rising' exhibition at Grey Street Gallery and 'Springboard' at the Pop Gallery.
